By the year 2508 humanity has exhausted Earth's natural resources and thus has created special ships that can mine and harvest other planets for their resources. Dead Space takes place in one of those elite spaceships (aka Planet Crackers) called the USG Ishimura.
USG Ishimura has gone mute, after one of its latest planet-cracking operations, losing communications with the other spacecrafts. Our protagonist, Isaac Clarke, is dispatched to uncover the silence behind the ship and repair any damages if necessary. Accompanied by Zach Hammond (Chief Security Officer of the USG Kellion), Kendra Daniels (an Earth Government Agent) and another corporation employee, whom dies after their crash-landing on the dock.
When the team enters the Ishimura they find out that the ship's crew have all died and then our team gets separated by a Necromorphs' attack.
Those foul beings were once humans whom were mutated when deceased by an extraterrestrial infection caused by the enigmatic devices known as the Markers and by some the Necromorphs are believed to be the heralds of humanity's ascension. They are being controlled via the Markers by a group known as the Brethren Moons, which are massive Necromorphs created after a Convergence Event initiated by a Marker device and their sole purpose is to create more of their kin.
The crew's plan is to restore the USG Ishimura and kill all the Necromorphs along the way and later to escape and so Isaac begins his journey to restore the communications system and other various things on the ship, as he encounters numbers of Necromorphs in each level of the Ishimura.
Eventually, Isaac manages to land on the planet below and face off with the Hive Mind controlling them, with the battle resulting into the creature's death. Hammond also dies in combat and Daniels betrays Isaac and also dies.
Nicole Brennan is Isaac's girlfriend - well, was - and a medical specialist aboard the USG Ishimura and that's the reason Isaac volunteered for the rescue mission.
As I said in the beginning and perhaps we all know by now that remakes come with a few changes for better or worse - this time for better.
Some of those changes are:
- Frostbite engine = better graphics for the remake
- Clarke actually has dialogues with his crew and there's a lot of it
- There's an additional ending to the remake and you can see it once you've gathered some collectibles
- No more loading screens
- The characters involved have full names
- New puzzles
- Modified map and objectives, as well as new side quests
- Enhanced atmospheric lighting
- Improved accessibility options
While these changes have been made, the developing team hasn't altered a lot, so the game is still recognizable and enjoyed by fans of the original just as much.
Like I said, even though I still haven't had the chance of playing the remake - or the original for that matter - I still loved the livestream, since that streamer is a nerd for games like this one and was reading everything along the way, so it was easy for me to love it and want to play it in the future.
